Anne Skinner

Anne is a graduate of both Edinburgh College of Art and Winchester School of Art.

As she has developed her career, she has become passionate about the Scottish coastline and has focused her work on native seascapes. She likes to visit and study the wider environment first, capturing the essence of its beauty through colour and the careful abstraction of form, light and weather, before returning to her studio to work: building the painting in carefully observed layers.

The result is a beautiful jewel-like portrayal of the scene, which represents the unity of painting and experience. The depth and distance achieved by Anne in her compositions show the elusive quality of our coastline and demonstrate that beauty is often out of reach and unattainable.

Following the award of the Hope Scott Trust Award in 2019, Anne travelled to Harris and has painted extensively both there and on Barra. She also loves to work in the expansive sandscapes of East Lothian, while most recently she has followed in the footsteps of the Scottish Colourists, painting at Mossyard Beach near the artists' colony of Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway.
